we have to heal, though not get too
swept up in the want to be healed
healing was never meant to be
a life-long journey
at some point, I read recently,
we have to make room for living—
for choosing ourselves
and tending our own flame
I am learning to heal and live,
at the same time; less afraid
of the dark now, having spent
so much time there
and, at some point, I chose myself:
no-one else was coming to save me
no-one else was going to feel my pain
[grieve what wasn’t,
and what should never
have been]
there is nothing more beautiful than
a person lit from inside, who knows
the bones of them, and shines
unashamedly
—it’s a rare sight
… we could take a leaf from the cats …
lounging, luxuriating in sun patches,
following their nose, twitch of the whiskers
adventure in the air …
playful, on their own terms
—sovereign beings
we each have to choose ourselves
find the power within:
breathe through it
grieve through it
